VW Transporter cambelt & water pump guide

Everything a VW Transporter owner needs to know about cambelt and water pump intervals — and why these two jobs almost always belong together.

How often does the cambelt need replacing?

Most VW Transporter engines fall around 5 years or 80,000–120,000 miles, depending on engine code. Mileage isn't the only factor — belt rubber degrades with age regardless of distance.

Why the water pump always goes with it

The water pump sits behind the cambelt and shares the same labour. Doing both together avoids a second strip-down a few years later — and a leaking pump can take the belt out long before its replacement interval.

Signs your cambelt needs urgent attention

  • Squeaks or ticking from the front of the engine
  • Oil leaks contaminating the belt area
  • Coolant loss with no visible external leak
  • The interval has been reached on either time or mileage

What "doing it properly" actually means

  • Genuine VW or proven OE-quality kit (belt, tensioner, idlers, water pump)
  • All torque values to manufacturer specification
  • Coolant drained, refilled and bled correctly
  • Auxiliary belt and tensioner inspected at the same time
